Product Leadership / 0→1 / Team Leadership

A web-form product for a business-data platform

The hardest part wasn't building the software. It was deciding what to build.

Role
  • Product lead
  • Engineering
  • Team lead
Scope
  • Product direction
  • Scope definition
  • Build and ship
  • Ownership handoff
Timeline
To add Actual timeline. It is the speed argument.

Context

A product built on a widely used business-data platform. At the start there was a very wide product vision.

Ambiguity

Target users, scope, product shape, and go-to-market direction were not yet defined. The first job was not implementation. It was turning ambiguity into a product direction.

Focus

Focus on one product.

The scope narrowed to a single, focused product: a web form that collects data into the platform from people outside it, who need no account of their own. One thing, done clearly, instead of a wide set of possibilities.

Build

To add Add build notes and sanitised screenshots.

Ship

To add Add release notes without internal detail.

Pivot

To add Describe the pivot at the product level only.

Handoff

Leadership includes handing it over.

Product ownership eventually moved to another engineer. Leading something is not owning it forever. It is also passing ownership on at the right time.
